Common character limits

Use these figures as writing references, not as a guarantee that a platform will accept your text. Services may count links, emojis, encoding and media differently.

The 160-character SMS figure applies to a single GSM-7 segment; Unicode text can reduce that to 70. A 160-character meta description is a planning target, not a search-engine hard limit. Check current platform requirements before publishing.

What is a character counter?

It measures the length of text as you write. KDOOM treats a character as a visible Unicode grapheme, so a combined emoji or accented letter usually counts as one. Depending on your setting, the total can also include spaces, tabs and line breaks.

How to use this counter

Type or paste into the editor. The four key numbers update immediately. Add a custom limit or choose a preset to see what remains; switch off Count spaces if you need a whitespace-free primary count. You can copy or clear the text without submitting a form.

With spaces vs. without spaces

Hello world has 11 characters with the space and 10 without it. The Without spaces metric excludes all whitespace, including tabs and line breaks.

Characters, words and letters

In Hi!, there are three characters, one word and two letters. Punctuation counts toward character limits, but not toward the letter total. Word counting recognizes repeated whitespace, apostrophes and hyphenated words without treating every space as another word.

Why limits matter

Short fields have less room to explain an idea. Checking length helps with social posts, video titles, form answers, bios, application responses and product descriptions. For SMS and platform publishing, treat this tool as a drafting guide because the destination may use a different counting rule.

Frequently asked questions

Does a space count as a character?

Yes. Count spaces is on by default. Turn it off to exclude whitespace from the main count and remaining amount.

Does punctuation count?

Yes. A period, comma or question mark is a visible character.

Do emojis count as characters?

The tool counts visible Unicode grapheme clusters. A combined emoji such as 👩🏽‍💻 normally counts as one character.

How do I count characters without spaces?

Read the Without spaces value above the editor or turn off Count spaces for the primary count.

What is the difference between characters and words?

Characters are visible symbols and whitespace; words are groups of letters or numbers separated by punctuation or whitespace.

Can I set my own limit?

Yes. Enter a positive whole number in Custom limit. The remaining value updates while you type.

Is this tool free?

Yes. The counter works without an account or a payment.

Does KDOOM save my text?

No. This counter processes text in your browser and does not send or store the editor contents on KDOOM servers.
